Project: Orienteering & TV in the Future

The long term goal of the "Orienteering & TV in the Future" project is to increase the quality of TV broadcasts from orienteering races and raise the standards by increasing knowledge and making best practice manuals.

This work includes:

  • Gathering information and opinions from TV people/producers
  • Gather and "review" previous international and national TV-productions to identify concepts that work/do not work
  • Description and practical use of known technical solutions
  • Matching disciplines with production concepts - set up "scripts" for TV-productions
  • Identify future research & development areas - especially related to technical solutions (e.g. tracking, virtual runners 3D graphics, wireless cameras etc.)
  • Get support from as many related groups/people as possible in order to collect information and opinions

One important tool in the project is the webpage orienteering-tv.net. The webpage is a wiki-type page - the project hopes to get a group of contributors building up knowledge in this field which is very important for the future of the sport.

There is a long way from gathering all the information to making good TV - but this step - which might be viewed upon as a pre-project in its current form - will surely contribute to bring the field forward. Proper structuring of all the information will be very important. A workshop or project group work to discuss the finding would be a natural continuance of the work.

Tentative work plan

The following is the tentative work plan for the project. The extent of each work package must be adjusted based on the project team available. The project is divided into two phases with a decision gate at the end of Phase 1 where the project plan for Phase 2 will be revised.

Phase 1

  • WP 1: Initial review of TV-productions to categorize building blocks. Study previous TV-productions from orienteering, and identify different "building blocks"/"scene types" used in each production. Each building block is to be described and categorized. An initial grading/review of "building blocks" will be attempted.
  • WP 2: Novel technology. Investigate use of novel technology in TV productions for orienteering.

Phase 2

  • WP 3: Categorize TV-productions from orienteering races. Study TV-productions from WOC 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 and World Cup races in 2011 and identify which building blocks are used, how they are used and success of using them. Also include the Norwegian "Big screen" project and possibly other TV productions. "Building blocks" defined in WP1 will be updated based on work in this WP.
  • WP 4: Identify best building blocks. Identify the best "building blocks" based on (1) WP 1 - WP 3 and (2) input from TV-people and other sources. This WP will involve collecting a lot of information from different sources.
  • WP 5: Templates for different disciplines. Based on WP 1-4, set up a templates with scripts for "Dream scenario" for different disciplines. A type of "best practice" may be a possibility as well.

Tentative time schedule

  • December 2011: Project Kick-off
  • December 2011 - February 2012: Focus on WP 1 and WP 2. Tentative delivery: Presentation at TV workshop organized by SOFT (not confirmed)

Based on discussions at the SOFT Workshop (not confirmed, tentative date is February 11th/12th), time schedule for Phase 2 will be set up and the project plan for Phase 2 may be revised.

Note! It has not been confirmed that there will be a SOFT workshop. The project plan will be changed accordingly if there is no SOFT workshop.

Project team

Jan Kocbach, Henning Spjelkavik. Further contributors TBD.

Planned content

The following is the planned content:

Non-profit project

The project is non-profit and lead by Jan Kocbach. All information gathered in the project will be publicly available. The project is independent of the IOF. The project will try to get support from as many related groups/people as possible in order to collect information and opinions. No financial support is needed in this initial phase as the project is planned to have no running costs.  Please contact Jan Kocbach on e-mail if you are interested in contributing to the project.

The project hopes to get the support of TV companies/producers through sharing of thoughts and information.
